Last Night at Chateau Marmont

Do you have any books currently sitting on your TBR shelf that the longer they sit there, the less likely you are to read them? I have a few like that. I bought them when they were all the rage, never got around to reading them…and now I’ve lost interest.

It’s why I have started structuring my monthly reading lists the way I have, so I can get through all my old purchases and Goodreads lists. I love reading what is new and in vogue…but there’s so many great books out there that have fallen by the wayside too.

Last Night at Chateau Marmont has been staring me in the face for years. The bold red cover isn’t easy to miss on the shelf. I loved The Devil Wears Prada, so when I saw Lauren Weisberger had published a new book, I snatched it up right away! And then I never read it. I think I may have started it once and gotten sidetracked with something else, but it finally made it back on my radar this month.

Like her last book, this one is also set in NYC. Brooke works two jobs to support her musical husband. It’s frustrating, but she fell in love with his music and passion, as much as the man himself. When he is discovered, his sudden rise to fame finds the couple unready to meet the challenges that comes with the bright lights of publicity.

The Devil Wears Prada was such a strong book–the characters are fierce and the plot is constantly driven by them. While Last Night is a nice, easy chick-lit book…that’s really all it is. It’s nice and easy. It’s a bit slow and dull, and so are the characters. Julian is about as predictable/stereotypical a male musician trope as you can get, and I just couldn’t connect with Brooke at all. It was a nice, easy read to have after coming back from our Austin trip, but…meh. I guess there’s a reason it sat on my shelf for so long.
