After a week of spooky fairy tales and serious mind twisters, I very much needed to lighten the mood. Thankfully, The Unfortunate Decisions of Dahlia Moss hit my schedule just in time, before I jump back into my Halloween list.
This book is quite silly, mostly ridiculous, and probably the nerdiest chick-lit I’ve ever read.
After a string of bad luck, Dahlia finds herself single, unemployed, and so broke she can’t hardly afford ramen noodles anymore. That’s broke, ya’ll. Out of the blue, though, a wealthy dude-bro in captain costume approaches her at a party and insists she is just the person to find his missing jeweled spear. Dahlia thinks he’s crazy, until she realizes he is talking about Zoth, a game similar to World of Warcraft…and then she KNOWS he’s crazy. Who pays $2,000 to track down a digital spear? But, she needs the money, so she gets crackin’.
Let the brain candy begin! Obviously this is not a serious book. Not in the slightest. But it IS hilarious and witty…and geeky. SO MUCH GEEK. I am not a gamer, so the whole MMORPG world is a bit beyond me, but I’ve watched people play, and the idea is sort of fascinating and addicting, and the author does a pretty great job of capturing the intricacies in his story.
As with any book of this nature, there is of course some romance, but it’s not a major feature in the book. I called this chick-lit, but I almost hesitate to pigeonhole Dahlia Moss into that category. It doesn’t so much follow the normal pattern of such a plot. Also…can I just say that I so was rooting for Detective Shuler over Nathan? Anybody else?
The Unfortunate Decisions of Dahlia Moss gets 3 Book Dragons from me. It’s a very cute, very fun book that any con-loving geek would enjoy!
