How was there ever a time when I did not love graphic novels? Story AND art? I was missing so much and I did not even know!
I finally got my hands on Nimona, which was the AdultBooklr pick for November. I’m only just a little late, but…what can I do? I’m pretty resigned to never being able to read this stuff on time, at least not until I win the lottery and can buy ALL THE BOOKS!
This one isn’t your typical trade collection. In fact, it’s not even a trade collection at all–it’s a true to form graphic novel–with chapters and page numbers and one pure story line with an ending.
Nimona is an impulsive young shapeshifter with a knack for villainy. Lord Ballister Blackheart is a villain with a vendetta. As sidekick and supervillain, Nimona and Lord Blackheart are about to wreak some serious havoc. Their mission: prove to the kingdom that Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin and his buddies at the Institution of Law Enforcement and Heroics aren’t the heroes everyone thinks they are.
Everything about this book is glorious: from the witty, sarcastic dialogue, to the backwards villain vs good guy plot, to the subtle…then not so subtle dark haired/light haired GAY GAY GAY romance. At first I was all “Oh, this is kind of drarry.” Then I was all “Drarry?” Then I was all “DRARRY!!!!” with bright neon signs.
Trust me, that will make more sense when you read it.
And you should totally read it. Because it’s amazing. Nimona herself is a badass, tell it like it is kind of person. The way she and Blackheart play off one another is lovely, and, well, I could go on and on…but…JUST READ IT.
I mostly don’t want to give this back to the library, and I’m starting to understand why it took so long for my turn on the holds list. Sigh. I guess I should give the next person a turn, huh? Darn.
